Unveiling of the Book Garden at Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens
Garden of Books” Offers 1,000 Free Books to Families at Saigon Zoo
A Summer Reading Oasis
In a summer initiative, Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens introduced the “Garden of Books,” offering 1,000 free books for families visiting the zoo. Situated near the lotus pond within the gardens, the book space was developed in collaboration between the zoo’s management, responsible for space refurbishment and staffing, and the Young Publishers, who donated a diverse collection of 1,000 books ranging from comics and literature to science, along with necessary furniture and shelves.
The initiative, spearheaded by Ms. Huỳnh Thu Thảo, Chairperson of Saigon Zoo’s Board, aims to foster a habit of reading, especially among children, in an age dominated by information technology where families might neglect teaching their children to read. “We want to create a habit of accessing books for everyone, particularly children,” Ms. Thảo said.
Zoo-Inspired Books for Kids
The opening of the Garden of Books was marked by the launch of “Bé tập tô màu – Thảo Cầm Viên của em” (My Coloring Book – Saigon Zoo), aimed at children aged three to six. According to the publishing house, some books in the reading space are inspired by stories about the animals cared for at the zoo, offering children insights into the characteristics and habits of some rare species.
Saigon Zoo – A Cultural and Educational Hub
Saigon Zoo, a 160-year-old landmark in Ho Chi Minh City, is a popular destination for residents and visitors from neighboring provinces. Known for its rare flora and fauna, the zoo also conducts skill-building workshops and nature education programs for children, especially on weekends and during summer holidays.
Promoting Reading Activities Nationwide
In addition to the Garden of Books at Saigon Zoo, various publishers and bookstores nationwide are organizing summer activities and promotions for young readers. Phuong Nam Bookstore has introduced five new titles suitable for young readers, enhancing both IQ and EQ. Kim Dong Publishing House is encouraging summer reading with titles like “Ba tớ là một runner” (My Dad is a Runner) and organizing free reading corners in Hanoi every Saturday for children aged three to eleven, guided by writers, poets, artists, and editors.
