The Importance of Parent-Child Reading Time
Parents: First Influencers in Fostering a Love for Reading in Children
Promoting Child Literacy
Writer Nguyễn Thị Kim Hòa, along with fellow authors Thủy Nguyên and Phát Dương, emphasize the crucial role of parents in sparking a love for reading in young children. In a discussion held on April 22 at Nguyễn Văn Bình Book Street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, they exchanged views on teaching children the joy of reading.
Creating a Reading Environment
Writer Thủy Nguyên believes that a child’s thinking is shaped by experiences and imagination. To find suitable books for children, parents should read excerpts to them, thereby fostering their interest. Phát Dương adds that parents should closely support their children in personal growth and creativity, engaging in meaningful conversations without making the child feel interrogated.
The Digital Age of Reading
With the advent of visually appealing books on digital platforms, children are exposed to a blend of information technology and interesting reading material, notes Phát Dương. E-books and audiobooks are making literature more accessible and engaging for the younger generation.

Kim Hòa’s Inspiration for Writing
In the discussion, Kim Hòa shared the inspiration behind her latest collection of short stories, “Vương quốc ngộ nghĩnh” (Whimsical Kingdom). With 17 years of devotion to children’s literature, she stresses the importance of respecting children’s personal interests. Parents shouldn’t force reading on their kids but encourage them to find joy in books alongside other interests like video games, drawing, or playing sports. “Parents need to develop storytelling skills to share and experience life with their children,” she advises.
Vietnam Book Day Celebration
The discussion was part of the second Vietnam Book Day in Ho Chi Minh City. Nguyễn Thị Kim Hòa, born in 1984 and overcoming physical disabilities from an early age, has published 15 books, including seven for children, and received several awards for her writing. Thủy Nguyên, born in 1988, has authored books showcasing Vietnamese culture to children. Phát Dương, a member of the Can Tho City Writers’ Association, has published several short story collections and won literary awards.
Vietnam Book Day, first held in 2014 and later renamed Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day in 2017, highlights the importance of books in enhancing knowledge and skills and developing a national reading culture.
