A Dream Come True: Firefighter Helps 7-Year-Old Leukemia Patient

During the days spent in the hospital, lost in a haze, the sudden words of a 7-year-old son echoed in Chị Loan’s ears, “”””Mom, can I become a firefighter now that I’m sick?”””” These words brought tears to her eyes.

For the past 4 months, Trần Đặng Trung Quân (7 years old) had to set aside unfinished lessons with his teachers at school. He had to get used to needles and intravenous medication after being diagnosed with a severe form of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (blood cancer).

After “”””a boat ride,”””” Chị Đặng Thị Kim Loan (45 years old) moved from Bình Thuận to Ho Chi Minh City to work and met Mr. Trần Văn Tâm (47 years old). Even though Mr. Tâm had been paralyzed since childhood and had to use a wheelchair, both of them admired each other’s circumstances, and that’s how they became a couple. Quân’s birth was a testament to their love.

When her son was admitted to the hospital, Chị Loan felt like her world had collapsed upon hearing the grim news from the doctor. Despite knowing that her youngest son was fragile, prone to illness, and had frequent fevers, Chị Loan never imagined that Quân would be afflicted by such a deadly disease.

“”””When he was little, he often complained of aches and pains, but I thought it was just common illnesses, so I bought him medicine. When he was bruised all over and the doctor said he had cancer, I felt like I had died, choked with tears. The day he was rushed to the emergency room, Quân, in his innocence, said he wanted to become a firefighter. The little one asked, ‘If I have this disease, can I still become a firefighter?’… I just looked at my child and turned away while crying,”””” Chị Loan emotionally recounted.

Because Mr. Tâm had difficulty in mobility, Chị Loan had to manage Quân’s care in the hospital all by herself. Apart from the worries about medication costs and daily meals, the dream of her little son becoming a firefighter always weighed heavily on the mother’s heart…

Thanks to the connection of the Social Work Department and Children’s Hospital 2 with various volunteer organizations, the Ho Chi Minh City Fire Department organized a simulated rescue exercise to fulfill Trung Quân’s dream of becoming a firefighter right within the hospital grounds.
